Awww hell yeah. We’ve actually got two (although they’re both in a bit of a state of disrepair). We’ve got a 430 which doesn’t run (bought it as an unfinished project, bodywork done but mechanically been sitting for years) and a 228 which annoyingly is from the year before they started galvanising them so it’s rotted out in a couple of areas.

Personally, I want an early lightweight SWB car with a breathed-on 2.8l injected engine from a later car.

Much more reliable and much more powerful :)

How do you like them? I’ve been almost-maybe-kinda considering selling my e24 and this is high on my want list.

Whoa, for real? Awesome. That sounds like a great combo, I was wondering about a swap personally... like a V8 from a newer Maserati, I’d even sacrilegiously consider some big German engine, as long as it’s being kept European, it’s a Maser after all

So I’m no where near in the market for a car, but is their size an issue for taller people? I’m 6’3” and I’ve heard it’s a tiny tiny car...

There is one for sale near me. I actually stopped to look at it, and discovered the owner collects them, including the 1UZ swapped one featured on NPOCP.

There’s one for sale in my area, looks to be in pretty good condition for 3k. If I had 3k, I’m pretty sure I would have it now.

Huh, what the hell is up with these backwards NACA ducts?

They’re really really nice cars. Me personally I haven’t done a great deal of driving them but my dad rates them very highly, and when I have driven them they’ve been great.

If you are looking for one they started galvanising chassis in 1990 or so, so after then you shouldn’t have problems with rust. The carbed engines are the ones that gained them their reputation, although with proper maintenance they can be perfectly alright. The injected later engines are much, much improved reliability-wise (my dad drove his for years with very few problems).

Interiors are really, really nice. 6 figure interior on a 4 figure car :)

That’s actually a bit of a fantasy of mine. If I can find an early car with grenaded engine then the 2.8 out of the 228 goes in that and the 4.2/4.7 out of a GranSport or GranTurismo goes in the 228 :) bit of a fantasy, but it would make for one hell of a car.

You’d have to run standalone engine management though as I’d be willing to bet that the management on a GT is tied to the auto box.

Hmmm, size-wise I’m not sure as I’m not the tallest person in the world. I don’t feel like my head’s close to the roof though so I’d say there’s a good few inches spare.

They’re not huge cars, but they’re not tiny either. Think E36-ish for the 4-doors and E30-ish for the early 2-doors and you’re about right. Might be my European-ness showing through there though...

You should definitely do that if you get the chance. It would be a bit of a pity to take out the standard 1-2 liter engine though, it’s so pretty.

Some research indicates it’s actually 12 inches shorter than an E30! That’s pretty small. Still, I guess I’d have to check one out in person to be sure.

Yea, I don’t know, it’s strange. Apparently there was a version with forward-facing ones:

...and one with just slotted vents:

I just don’t understand how those reversed ones are supposed to work - NACA ducts were designed to be directional... can they suck in air when the airflow is flowing “against the grain”?

Hmmm, that is odd. It's not even as if they're at the base of the windscreen where you get a recirculation...

Huh, that is a big difference. Looking at the wheelbases they're only about 1" different so the centre of the car is probably fairly similar. Must be a short boot on the Mas...

My dad had one of these when I was a kid. Silver 228 biturbo.

I almost bought one several years ago, but the only ones I could find were automatics.
